Scott Reid’s claustrophobic recreation of the tiny Sun Studio opens up for the show’s finale and what a triumph it is as the cast returns in flamboyant costumes so Vanhevel can sing Hound Dog, Brayne with Ghost Riders in the Sky, Penny sings See You Later Alligator and Greenfield with Whole Lotta Shaking Goin’ On. Samantha Currie as Dyanne gives a sultry rendition of the Peggy Lee classic Fever and then really takes things up several notches with I Hear You Knocking.Īll the numbers owe a great debt to Eric Wigston as Perkin’s brother Jay on bass and Steven Jackson Jr. Perry’s flashback moments with Brayne, Vanhevel and Penny recalling the day he met each of these men are both effective and illuminating, showing these men are skilled actors as well as musicians.
The clever device that director Thom Allison uses is to have Stafford Perry as Phillips acknowledge the audience even encouraging them to extend their applause and cheers, especially the first time each legend sings.
